24. IN THE CAN

As the white van rolled onto the front drive of the Stalin family home, Tiffany and Marion scrambled out through the home’s rear patio doors and raced around the swimming pool to the fence at the back of the garden.

Marion vaulted the fence easily, but Alan had to reach over from the other side to pull Tiffany up.

Back around the front of Tiffany’s home, Robin and Flash squatted in a wheelie bin store as they watched one of Gisborne’s goons get out the front of the van. He was unmasked and looked uncomfortable in a suit that was way too tight.

‘Van wasn’t that dirty earlier,’ Flash whispered. ‘It’s been off-road.’

The goon walked to the back of the van and let out Tiffany’s dad, Ken Stalin.

‘Think about messing around and I’ll have Sandra cut your boy’s thumbs off,’ the goon warned chillingly.

Ken cut a pathetic figure, with long skinny legs in white shorts and a bloodstain down his white polo shirt from a punch in the nose.

‘I understand,’ Ken said shakily, as he got shoved towards his front door.

Once the pair were inside, Robin crept up to the van to make sure there were no other passengers, then peered into the kitchen through the bay window at the front of the house.

Robin heard Ken shout. ‘Tiffany? Princess? Are you home?’

Robin realised the home had the same floorplan as Alan’s place in the next street. Then he ducked as the kitchen lights flicked on. When he peeked again, the two men were heading upstairs and out of earshot.
